Dear College Applicant,

You don’t really know how to start, do you? The college essay due date is just around the corner, and you are sitting with pen in hand, trying to figure out how to begin writing. Or worse, you are doing everything you can to avoid thinking about the college essay, even doing homework.

I understand. I taught high school English for 25 years, and I know there was nothing in the English classroom at any of the departments I taught in that really showed you how to approach the college essay. That’s because the college essay is unique. The five-paragraph essay doesn’t quite work. Creative writing assignments are a little out-of-place or over-the-top for most college essay requirements, and even the class work you do with your senior English teacher around application time is too stilted, or it assumes that you already know what to write about and that you only need to know how to write it. After all, you’re a senior.

But, English teachers don’t teach you to write to sell yourself. In high school you have been writing mostly to share what you have learned with a teacher or to learn a particular format or essay style like the comparison-contrast essay or the persuasive essay. These are all important practices of basic written communication and good ways to test understanding, but they do not quite translate into a good college essay.

And, although English teachers can write, they are not professional essayists or even very familiar with the kind of personal touch and the “sell” that should go into a college essay.

Now that I’m retired and have worked several years as a college application consultant, I wish I had known then what I know now and could have shared it with my students. They did fine getting into college, but they were not in the competitive environment you are in today. They also were not competing against such sophisticated applicants, many of whom have the money and/or the opportunity to use college application consultants.

That’s why I wrote this e-book, to make up for what I didn’t know to tell my senior English students as they started down that long and difficult path of entering a college of their choice.

This is what Todd Johnson, the principal college admissions consultant at College Admissions Partners, had to say about the book:

"...A major strength of the book is the use of actual essay prompts from the common app as well as various colleges throughout the country. The author discusses in detail each prompt to evaluate the prompt and then discusses issues surrounding the answering of that prompt. After discussing the prompts, the author then reviews actual essay responses to that prompt and dissects the answers to show what worked and what didn’t. This use of examples is one of the greatest strengths of the book and the examples alone make the book worth the cost..."

There are many more tips in this book to help you, including sample essays using actual college application prompts!
